^You see察院he said察 there¨s my old client察Van Trompe察has come over from Kentucky察and set all his slaves free察and he has bought a place seven miles up the creek察here察back in the woods察where nobody goes察unless they go on purpose察and it¨s a place that isn¨t found in a hurry。 There she¨d be safe enough察but the plague of the thing is察nobody could drive a carriage there tonight察but me。 ̄
^Why not拭Cudjoe is an excellent driver。 ̄
^Ay察ay察but here it is。 The creek has to be crossed twice察and the second crossing is quite dangerous察unless one knows it as I do。 I have crossed it a hundred times on horseback察and know exactly the turns to take。 And so察you see察there¨s no help for it。 Cudjoe must put in the horses察as quietly as may be察about twelve o¨clock察and I¨ll take her over察and then察to give color to the matter察he must carry me on to the next tavern to take the stage for Columbus察that comes by about three or four察and so it will look as if I had had the carriage only for that。 I shall get into business bright and early in the morning。 But I¨m thinking I shall feel rather cheap there察after all that¨s been said and done察but察hang it察I can¨t help it
^Your heart is better than your head察in this case察John察院said the wife察laying her little white hand on his。 ^Could I ever have loved you察had I not known you better than you know yourself拭院And the little woman looked so handsome察with the tears sparkling in her eyes察that the senator thought he must be a decidedly clever fellow察to get such a pretty creature into such a passionate admiration of him察and so察what could he do but walk off soberly察to see about the carriage。 At the door察however察he stopped a moment察and then coming back察he said察with some hesitation。
^Mary察I don¨t know how you¨d feel about it察but there¨s that drawer full of things!of!of!poor little Henry¨s。 ̄ So saying察he turned quickly on his heel察and shut the door after him。
His wife opened the little bed´room door adjoining her room and察taking the candle察set it down on the top of a bureau there察then from a small recess she took a key察and put it thoughtfully in the lock of a drawer察and made a sudden pause察while two boys察who察boy like察had followed close on her heels察stood looking察with silent察significant glances察at their mother。 And oh mother that reads this察has there never been in your house a drawer察or a closet察the opening of which has been to you like the opening again of a little grave拭Ah happy mother that you are察if it has not been so。
Mrs。 Bird slowly opened the drawer。 There were little coats of many a form and pattern察piles of aprons察and rows of small stockings察and even a pair of little shoes察worn and rubbed at the toes察were peeping from the folds of a paper。 There was a toy horse and wagon察a top察a ball察memorials gathered with many a tear and many a heart´break She sat down by the drawer察and察leaning her head on her hands over it察wept till the tears fell through her fingers into the drawer察then suddenly raising her head察she began察with nervous haste察selecting the plainest and most substantial articles察and gathering them into a bundle。
^Mamma察院said one of the boys察gently touching her arm察 you going to give away those things拭
^My dear boys察院she said察softly and earnestly察 if our dear察loving little Henry looks down from heaven察he would be glad to have us do this。 I could not find it in my heart to give them away to any common person!to anybody that was happy察but I give them to a mother more heart´broken and sorrowful than I am察and I hope God will send his blessings with them
There are in this world blessed souls察whose sorrows all spring up into joys for others察whose earthly hopes察laid in the grave with many tears察are the seed from which spring healing flowers and balm for the desolate and the distressed。 Among such was the delicate woman who sits there by the lamp察dropping slow tears察while she prepares the memorials of her own lost one for the outcast wanderer。
After a while察Mrs。 Bird opened a wardrobe察and察taking from thence a plain察serviceable dress or two察she sat down busily to her work´table察and察with needle察scissors察and thimble察at hand察quietly commenced the ^letting down ̄ process which her husband had recommended察and continued busily at it till the old clock in the corner struck twelve察and she heard the low rattling of wheels at the door。
^Mary察院said her husband察coming in察with his overcoat in his hand察 you must wake her up now察we must be off。 ̄
Mrs。 Bird hastily deposited the various articles she had collected in a small plain trunk察and locking it察desired her husband to see it in the carriage察and then proceeded to call the woman。 Soon察arrayed in a cloak察bonnet察and shawl察that had belonged to her benefactress察she appeared at the door with her child in her arms。 Mr。 Bird hurried her into the carriage察and Mrs。 Bird pressed on after her to the carriage steps。 Eliza leaned out of the carriage察and put out her hand察a hand as soft and beautiful as was given in return。 She fixed her large察dark eyes察full of earnest meaning察on Mrs。 Bird¨s face察and seemed going to speak。 Her lips moved察she tried once or twice察but there was no sound察and pointing upward察with a look never to be forgotten察she fell back in the seat察and covered her face。 The door was shut察and the carriage drove on。
What a situation察now察for a patriotic senator察that had been all the week before spurring up the legislature of his native state to pass more stringent resolutions against escaping fugitives察their harborers and abettors
Our good senator in his native state had not been exceeded by any of his brethren at Washington察in the sort of eloquence which has won for them immortal renown How sublimely he had sat with his hands in his pockets察and scouted all sentimental weakness of those who would put the welfare of a few miserable fugitives before great state interests
He was as bold as a lion about it察and ^mightily convinced ̄ not only himself察but everybody that heard him察but then his idea of a fugitive was only an idea of the letters that spell the word察or at the most察the image of a little newspaper picture of a man with a stick and bundle with ^Ran away from the subscriber ̄ under it。 The magic of the real presence of distress察the imploring human eye察the frail察trembling human hand察the despairing appeal of helpless agony察these he had never tried。 He had never thought that a fugitive might be a hapless mother察a defenceless child察like that one which was now wearing his lost boy¨s little well´known cap察and so察as our poor senator was not stone or steel察as he was a man察and a downright noble´hearted one察too察he was察as everybody must see察in a sad case for his patriotism。 And you need not exult over him察good brother of the Southern States察for we have some inklings that many of you察under similar circumstances察would not do much better。 We have reason to know察in Kentucky察as in Mississippi察are noble and generous hearts察to whom never was tale of suffering told in vain。 Ah察good brother is it fair for you to expect of us services which your own brave察honorable heart would not allow you to render察were you in our place
Be that as it may察if our good senator was a political sinner察he was in a fair way to expiate it by his night¨s penance。 There had been a long continuous period of rainy weather察and the soft察rich earth of Ohio察as every one knows察is admirably suited to the manufacture of mud!and the road was an Ohio railroad of the good old times。
^And pray察what sort of a road may that be拭院says some eastern traveller察who has been acomustomed to connect no ideas with a railroad察but those of smoothness or speed。
Know察then察innocent eastern friend察that in benighted regions of the west察where the mud is of unfathomable and sublime depth察roads are made of round rough logs察arranged transversely side by side察and coated over in their pristine freshness with earth察turf察and whatsoever may come to hand察and then the rejoicing native calleth it a road察and straightway essayeth to ride thereupon。 In process of time察the rains wash off all the turf and grass aforesaid察move the logs hither and thither察in picturesque positions察up察down and crosswise察with divers chasms and ruts of black mud intervening。
Over such a road as this our senator went stumbling along察making moral reflections as continuously as under the circumstances could be expected察the carriage proceeding along much as follows察bump bump bump slush down in the mud the senator察woman and child察reversing their positions so suddenly as to come察without any very acomurate adjustment察against the windows of the down´hill side。 Carriage sticks fast察while Cudjoe on the outside is heard making a great muster among the horses。 After various ineffectual pullings and twitchings察just as the senator is losing all patience察the carriage suddenly rights itself with a bounce察two front wheels go down into another abyss察and senator察woman察and child察all tumble promiscuously on to the front seat察senator¨s hat is jammed over his eyes and nose quite unceremoniously察and he considers himself fairly extinguished察child cries察and Cudjoe on the outside delivers animated addresses to the horses察who are kicking察and floundering察and straining under repeated cracks of the whip。 Carriage springs up察with another bounce察down go the hind wheels察senator察woman察and child察fly over on to the back seat察his elbows encountering her bonnet察and both her feet being jammed into his hat察which flies off in the concussion。 After a few moments the ^slough ̄ is passed察and the horses stop察panting察the senator finds his hat察the woman straightens her bonnet and hushes her child察and they brace themselves for what is yet to come。
For a while only the continuous bump bump intermingled察just by way of variety察with divers side plunges and compound shakes察and they begin to flatter themselves that they are not so badly off察after all。 At last察with a square plunge察which puts all on to their feet and then down into their seats with incredible quickness察the carriage stops察and察after much outside commotion察Cudjoe appears at the door。
^Please察sir察it¨s powerful bad spot察this¨ yer。 I don¨t know how we¨s to get clar out。 I¨m a thinkin¨ we¨ll have to be a gettin¨ rails。 ̄
The senator despairingly steps out察picking gingerly for some firm foothold察down goes one foot an immeasurable depth察he tries to pull it up察loses his balance察and tumbles over into the mud察and is fished out察in a very despairing condition察by Cudjoe。
But we forbear察out of sympathy to our readers¨ bones。 Western travellers察who have beguiled the midnight hour in the interesting process of pulling down rail fences察to pry their carriages out of mud holes察will have a respectful and mournful sympathy with our unfortunate hero。 We beg them to drop a silent tear察and pass on。
It was full late in the night when the carriage emerged察dripping and bespattered察out of the creek察and stood at the door of a large farmhouse。
It took no inconsiderable perseverance to arouse the inmates察but at last the respectable proprietor appeared察and undid the door。 He was a great察tall察bristling Orson of a fellow察full six feet and some inches in his stockings察and arrayed in a red flannel hunting´shirt。 A very heavy mat of sandy hair察in a decidedly tousled condition察and a beard of some days¨ growth察gave the worthy man an appearance察to say the least察not particularly prepossessing。 He stood for a few minutes holding the candle aloft察and blinking on our travellers with a dismal and mystified expression that was truly ludicrous。 It cost some effort of our senator to induce him to comprehend the case fully察and while he is doing his best at that察we shall give him a little introduction to our readers。
Honest old John Van Trompe was once quite a considerable land´owner and slave´owner in the State of Kentucky。 Having ^nothing of the bear about him but the skin察院and being gifted by nature with a great察honest察just heart察quite equal to his gigantic frame察he had been for some years witnessing with repressed uneasiness the workings of a system equally bad for oppressor and oppressed。 At last察one day察John¨s great heart had swelled altogether too big to wear his bonds any longer察so he just took his pocket´book out of his desk察and went over into Ohio察and bought a quarter of a township of good察rich land察made out free papers for all his people察men察women察and children察packed them up in wagons察and sent them off to settle down察and then honest John turned his face up the creek察and sat quietly down on a snug察retired farm察to enjoy his conscience and his reflections。
^Are you the man that will shelter a poor woman and child from slave´catchers拭院said the senator察explicitly。
^I rather think I am察院said honest John察with some considerable emphasis。
^I thought so察院 said the senator。
^If there¨s anybody comes察院said the good man察stretching his tall察muscular form upward察 why here I¨m ready for him此and I¨ve got seven sons察each six foot high察and they¨ll be ready for ¨em。 Give our respects to ¨em察院said John察 tell ¨em it
