up his dwelling in Brethil察and would return soon to Nargothrond。
Then Turambar asked for panions willing to aid him in his peril察and Dorlas stood forth察but no others。
Therefore Dorlas upbraided the people察and spoke scorn of Brandir察who could not play the part of the heir of the house
of Haleth察and Brandir was shamed before his people察and was bitter at heart。 But Hunthor察kinsman of Brandir察asked
his leave to go in his stead。 Then Turambar said farewell to N┴niel察and she was filled with fear and foreboding察and their
parting was sorrowful察but Turambar set out with his two panions and went to Nen Girith。
Then N┴niel being unable to endure her fear察and unwilling to wait in the Ephel tidings of Turambar's fortune察set
forth after him察and a great pany went with her。 At this Brandir was filled all the more with dread察and he sought to
dissuade her and the people that would go with her from this rashness察but they heeded him not。 Therefore he renounced
his lordship察and all love for the people that had scorned him察and having naught left but his love for N┴niel he girt
himself with a sword and went after her察but being lame he fell far behind。
Now Turambar came to Nen Girith at sundown察and there he learned that Glaurung lay on the brink of the high
shores of Teiglin察and was like to move when night fell。 Then he called those tidings good察for the dragon lay at Cabed´
en´Aras察where the river ran in a deep and narrow gorge that a hunted deer might overleap察and Turambar thought that he
would seek no further察but would attempt to pass over the gorge。 Therefore he purposed to creep down at dusk察and
descend into the ravine under night察and cross over the wild water察and then to climb up the further cliff察and so e to
the dragon beneath his guard。
This counsel he took察but the heart of Dorlas failed when they came to the races of Teiglin in the dark察and he
dared not attempt the perilous crossing察but drew back and lurked in the woods察burdened with shame。 Turambar and
Hunthor察nonetheless察crossed over in safety察for the loud roaring of the water drowned all other sounds察and Glaurung
slept。 But ere the middle´night the dragon roused察and with a great noise and blast cast his forward part across the
chasm察and began to draw his bulk after。 Turambar and Hunthor were well´nigh overe by the heat and the stench察as
they sought in haste for a way up to e at Glaurung察and Hunthor was slain by a great stone that was dislodged from
on high by the passage of the dragon察and smote him on the head and cast him into the river。 So he ended察of the house
of Haleth not the least valiant
Then Turambar summoned all his will and courage and climbed the cliff alone察and came beneath the dragon。
Then he drew Gurthang察and with all the might of his arm察and of his hate察he thrust it into the soft belly of the Worm察
even up to the hilts。 But when Glaurung felt his death´pang察he screamed察and in his dreadful throe he heaved up his bulk
and hurled himself across the chasm察and there lay lashing and coiling in his agony。 And he set all in a blaze about him察
and beat all to ruin察until at last his fires died察and he lay still。
Now Gurthang had been wrested from Turambar's hand in the throe of Glaurung察and it clave to the belly of the
dragon。 Turambar therefore crossed the water once more察desiring to recover his sword and to look upon his foe察and he
found him stretched at his length察and rolled upon one side察and the hilts of Gurthang stood in his belly。 Then Turambar
seized the hilts and set his foot upon the belly察and cried in mockery of the dragon and his words at Nargothrond此'Hail察
Worm of Morgoth Well met again Die now and the darkness have thee Thus is T┣rin son of H┣rin avenged。'
Then he wrenched out the sword察but a spout of black blood followed it察and fell on his hand察and the venom
burned it。 And thereupon Glaurung opened his eyes and looked upon Turambar with such malice that it smote him as a
blow察and by that stroke and the anguish of the venom he fell into a dark swoon察and lay as one dead察and his sword was
beneath him。
The screams of Glaurung rang in the woods察and came to the people that waited at Nen Girith察and when those
that looked forth heard them察and saw afar the ruin and burning that the dragon made察they deemed that he had
triumphed and was destroying those that assailed him。 And N┴niel sat and shuddered beside the falling water察and at the
voice of Glaurung her darkness crept upon her again察so that she could not stir from that place of her own will。
Even so Brandir found her察for he came to Nen Girith at last察limping wearily察and when he heard that the dragon
had crossed the river and had beaten down his foes察his heart yearned towards N┴niel in pity。 Yet he thought also此
'Turambar is dead察but N┴niel lives。 Now it may be that she will e with me察and I will lead her away察and so we shall
escape from the dragon together。' After a while therefore he stood by N┴niel察and he said此'e It is time to go。 If you
will察I will lead you。' And he took her hand察and she arose silently察and followed him察and in the darkness none saw them
go。
But as they went down the path to the Crossings the moon rose察and cast a grey light on the land察and N┴niel said此
'Is this the way' And Brandir answered that he knew no way察save to flee as they might from Glaurung察and escape into
the wild。 But N┴niel said此'The Black Sword was my beloved and my husband。 To seek him only do I go。 What else
could you think' And she sped on before him。 Thus she came towards the Crossings of Teiglin and beheld Haudh´en´
Elleth in the white moonlight察and great dread came on her。 Then with a cry she turned away察casting off her cloak察and
fled southward along the river察and her white raiment shone in the moon。
Thus Brandir saw her from the hill´side察and turned to cross her path察but he was still behind her when she came
to the ruin of Glaurung nigh the brink of Cabed´en´Aras。 There she saw the dragon lying察but she heeded him not察for a
man lay beside him察and she ran to Turambar察and called his name in vain。 Then finding that his hand was burned she
washed it with tears and bound it about with a strip of her raiment察and she kissed him and cried on him again to awake。
Thereat Glaurung stirred for the last time ere he died察and he spoke with his last breath察saying此'Hail察Nienor察daughter
of H┣rin。 We meet again ere the end。 I give thee joy that thou hast found thy brother at last。 And now thou shalt know
him此a stabber in the dark察treacherous to foes察faithless to friends察and a curse unto his kin察T┣rin son of H┣rin But the
worst of all his deeds thou shalt feel in thyself。'
Then Glaurung died察and the veil of his malice was taken from her察and she remembered all the days of her life。
Looking down upon T┣rin she cried此'Farewell察O twice beloved A T┣rin Turambar turun ambartanen此master of doom
by doom mastered O happy to be dead' Then Brandir who had heard all察standing stricken upon the edge of ruin察
hastened towards her察but she ran from him distraught with horror and anguish察and ing to the brink of Cabed´en´
Aras she cast herself over察and was lost in the wild water。
Then Brandir came and looked down察and turned away in horror察and though he no longer desired life察he could
not seek death in that roaring water。 And thereafter no man looked again upon Cabed´en´Aras察nor would any beast or
bird e there察nor any tree grow察and it was named Cabed Naeramarth察the Leap of Dreadful Doom。
But Brandir made his way back to Nen Girith察to bring tidings to the people察and he met Dorlas in the woods察and
slew him此the first blood that ever he had spilled察and the last。 And he came to Nen Girith察and men cried to him此'Have
you seen her拭For N┴niel is gone。'
And he answered此'N┴niel is gone for ever。 The Dragon is dead察and Turambar is dead察and those tidings are
good。' The people murmured at these words察saying that he was crazed察but Brandir said此'Hear me to the end N┴niel the
beloved is also dead。 She cast herself into Teiglin察desiring life no more察for she learned that she was none other than
Nienor daughter of H┣rin of Dor´l┏min察ere her forgetfulness came upon her察and that Turambar was her brother察T┣rin
son of H┣rin。 '
But even as he ceased察and the people wept察T┣rin himself came before them。 For when the dragon died察his
swoon left him察and he fell into a deep sleep of weariness。 But the cold of the night troubled him察and the hilts of
Gurthang drove into his side察and he awoke。 Then he saw that one had tended his hand察and he wondered much that he
was left nonetheless to lie upon the cold ground察and he called察and hearing no answer he went in search of aid察for he
was weary and sick。
But when the people saw him they drew back in fear察thinking that it was his unquiet spirit察and he said此'Nay察be
glad察for the Dragon is dead察and I live。 But wherefore have you scorned my counsel察and e into peril拭And where is
N┴niel拭For her I would see。 And surely you did not bring her from her home'
Then Brandir told him that it was so察and N┴niel was dead。 But the wife of Dorlas cried out此'Nay察lord察he is
crazed。 For he came here saying that you were dead察and he called it good tidings。 But you live。'
Then Turambar was wrathful察and believed that all Brandir said or did was done in malice towards himself and
N┴niel察begrudging their love察and he spoke evilly to Brandir察calling him Club´foot。 Then Brandir reported all that he
had heard察and named N┴niel Nienor daughter of H┣rin察and he cried out upon Turambar with the last words of
Glaurung察that he was a curse unto his kin and to all that harboured him。
Then Turambar fell into a fury察for in those words he heard the feet of his doom overtaking him察and he charged
Brandir with leading N┴niel to her death察and publishing with delight the lies of Glaurung察if indeed be devised them not
himself。 Then he cursed Brandir察and slew him察and he fled from the people into the woods。 But after a while his
madness left him察and he came to Haudh´en´Elleth察and there sat察and pondered all his deeds。 And he cried upon
Finduilas to bring him counsel察for he knew not whether he would do now more ill to go to Doriath to seek his kin察or to
forsake them for ever and seek death in battle。
And even as he sat there Mablung with a pany of Grey´elves came over the Crossings of Teiglin察and he
knew T┣rin察and hailed him察and was glad indeed to find him yet living察for he had learned of the ing forth of
Glaurung and that his path led to Brethil察and also he had heard report that the Black Sword of Nargothrond now dwelt
there。 Therefore he came to give warning to T┣rin察and help if need be察but T┣rin said此'You e too late。 The Dragon
is dead。'
Then they marvelled察and gave him great praise察but he cared nothing for it察and said此'This only I ask此give me
news of my kin察for in Dor´l┏min I learned that they had gone to the Hidden Kingdom。'
Then Mablung was dismayed察but needs must tell to T┣rin how Morwen was lost察and Nienor cast into a spell of
dumb forgetfulness察and how she escaped them upon the borders of Doriath and fled northwards。 Then at last T┣rin
knew that doom had overtaken him察and that he had slain Brandir unjustly察so that the words of Glaurung were fulfilled
in him。 And he laughed as one fey察crying此'This is a bitter jest indeed' But he bade Mablung go察and return to Doriath察
with curses upon it。 'And a curse too upon your errand' he cried。 'This only was wanting。 Now es the night。'
Then he fled from them like the wind察and they were amazed察wondering what madness had seized him察and they
followed after him。 But T┣rin far out´ran them察and he came to Cabed´en´Aras察and heard the roaring of the water察and
saw that all the leaves fell sere from the trees察as though winter had e。 There he drew forth his sword察that now alone
remained to him of all his possessions察and he said此'Hail Gurthang No lord or loyalty dost thou know察save the hand
that wieldeth thee。 From no blood wilt thou shrink。 Wilt thou therefore take T┣rin Turambar察wilt thou slay me swiftly'
And from the blade rang a cold voice in answer此'Yea察I will drink thy blood gladly察that so I may forget the blood
of Beleg my master察and the blood of Brandir slain unjustly。 I will slay thee swiftly。'
Then T┣rin set the hilts upon the ground察and cast himself upon the point of Gurthang察and the black blade took
his life。 But Mablung and the Elves came and looked on the shape of Glaurung lying dead察and upon the body of T┣rin察
and they grieved察and when Men of Brethil came thither察and they learned the reasons of T┣rin's madness and death察they
were aghast察and Mablung said bitterly此'I also have been meshed in the doom of the Children of H┣rin察and thus with my
tidings have slain one that I loved。'
Then they lifted up T┣rin察and found that Gurthang had broken asunder。 But Elves and Men gathered there great
store of wood察and they made a mighty burning察and the Dragon was consumed to ashes。 T┣rin they l
