my very first job interview。 I¨d spent the last week parked on
Lily¨s couch察still weak and exhausted察until she finally yelled at
me to leave!if only for a few hours each day。 Not sure what else to
do with myself察I bought a MetroCard and rode the subways察
listlessly dropping off r└sum└s as I went。 I left them with security
guards at all the big magazine publishers察with a halfhearted cover
letter explaining that I wanted to be an editorial assistant and
gain some magazine writing experience。 I was too weak and tired to
care if anyone actually read them察and the last thing I was
expecting was an interview。 But Lily¨s phone had rung just the day
before and察amazingly察someone from human resources at Elias´Clark
wanted me to e in for a ^chat。 ̄ I wasn¨t sure if it would be
considered an official interview or not察but a ^chat ̄ sounded more
palatable either way。
I washed down Advil with Pepto and managed to assemble a jacket and
pants that did not match and in no way created a suit察but at least
they stayed put on my emaciated frame。 A blue button´down察a
not´too´perky ponytail察and a pair of slightly scuffed flats
pleted my look。 It wasn¨t great!in fact察it bordered on supremely
ugly!but it would have to suffice。They¨re not going to hire me or
reject me on the outfit alone察I remember thinking。 Clearly察I was
barely lucid。
I showed up on time for my elevenA 。M。 interview and didn¨t panic
until I encountered the line of leggy察Twiggy types waiting to be
permitted to board the elevators。 Their lips never stopped moving察
and their gossip was punctuated only by the sound of their stilettos
clacking on the floor。Clackers察I thought。That¨s perfect。 The
elevators。Breathe in察breathe out察I reminded myself。You will not
throw up。 You will not throw up。 You¨re just here to talk about
being an editorial assistant察and then it¨s straight back to the
couch。 You will not throw up。 ^Why yes察I¨d love to work at
ReactionWell察sure察I supposeThe Buzzwould be suitable。 Oh察what拭I
may have my pick拭Well察I¨ll need the night to decide between there
and Maison Vous。Delightful
Moments later I was sporting a rather unflattering ^guest ̄ sticker
on my rather unflattering pseudosuit not soon enough察I discovered
that guests in the know simply stuck these passes on their bags察or察
even better察discarded them immediately!only the most uncouth losers
actuallywore them and heading toward the elevators。 And then 。 。 。
I boarded。 Up察up察up and away察hurtling through space and time and
infinite sexiness en route to 。 。 。 human resources。
I allowed myself to relax for a moment or two during that swift察
quiet ride。 Deep察pouty perfumes mixed with the smell of fresh
leather to turn those elevators from the merely functional to the
almost erotic。 We whisked between floors察stopping to let out the
beauties atChic察Mantra察The Buzz察andCoquette 。 The doors opened
silently察reverently察to stark white reception areas。 Chic furniture
with clean察simple lines dared people to sit察ready to scream out in
agony if anyone!horror spilled。 The magazines¨ names rested in bold
black and identifiable察individual typeface along the walls that
flanked the lobby。 Thick察opaque glass doors protected the titles。
They¨re names the average American recognizes but never imagines to
be turning and churning and spinning under one very high city roof。
While I¨d admittedly never held a job more impressive than frozen
yogurt scooper察I¨d heard enough stories from my newly minted
professional friends to know that corporate life just didn¨t look
like this。 Not even close。 Absent were the nauseating fluorescent
lights察the never´shows´dirt carpeting。 Where dowdy secretaries
should have been ensconced察polished young girls with prominent
cheekbones and power suits presided。 Office supplies didn¨t exist
Those basic necessities like organizers察garbage cans察and books
were simply not present。 I watched as six floors disappeared in
swirls of white perfection before I felt the venom and heard the
voice。
^She。 Is。 Such。 A。 Bitch Icannot deal with her anymore。 Who does
that拭I mean察really!WHO DOES THAT拭院hissed a twenty´something girl
in a snakeskin skirt and a very mini tank top察looking more suited
for a late night at Bungalow 8 than a day at the office。
^I know。 Iknooooooow。 Like察what do you think I¨ve had to put up
with for the past six months拭Total bitch。 And terrible taste察too察院
agreed her friend察with an emphatic shake of her adorable bob。
Mercifully察I arrived at my floor and the elevator slid
open。Interesting察I thought。 If you¨re paring this potential work
environment to an average day in the life of a cliquey junior high
girl察it might even be better。 Stimulating拭Well察maybe not。 Kind察
sweet察nurturing拭No察not exactly。 The kind of place that just makes
you want to smile and do a great job拭No察OK拭No But if you¨re
looking for fast察thin察sophisticated察impossibly hip察and
heart´wrenchingly stylish察Elias´Clark is mecca。
The gorgeous jewelry and impeccable makeup of the human resources
receptionist did nothing to allay my overwhelming feelings of
inadequacy。 She told me to sit and ^feel free to look over some of
our titles。 ̄ Instead察I tried frantically to memorize the names of
all the editors in chief of the pany¨s titles!as if they were
going to actually quiz me on them。 Ha I already knew Stephen
Alexander察of course察forReaction magazine察and it wasn¨t too hard
to rememberThe Buzz ¨s Tanner Michel。 Those were really the only
interesting things they published anyway察I figured。 I¨d do fine。
A short察svelte woman introduced herself as Sharon。 ^So察dear察
you¨re looking to break into magazines察are you拭院she asked as she
led me past a string of long´legged model look´alikes to her stark察
cold office。 ^It¨s a tough thing to do right out of college察you
know。 Lots and lots of petition out there for very few jobs。 And
the few jobs that are available察well They¨re not exactly
high´paying察if you know what I mean。 ̄
I looked down at my cheap察mismatched suit and very wrong shoes and
wondered why I¨d even bothered。 Already deep in thought over how I
was going to crawl back to that sofa bed with enough Cheez´Its and
cigarettes to last a fortnight察I barely noticed when she almost
whispered察 But I have to say察there¨s an amazing opportunity open
right now察and it¨s going to go fast
Hmm。 My antennae perked up as I tried to force her to make eye
contact with me。 Opportunity拭Go fast拭My mind was racing。 She
wanted to help me拭She liked me拭Why察I hadn¨t even opened my mouth
yet!how could shelike me拭And why exactly was she starting to sound
like a car salesman
^Dear察can you tell me the name of the editor in chief ofRunway 拭院
she asked察looking pointedly at me for the first time since I¨d sat
down。
Blank。 pletely and totally blank察I couldn¨t remember a thing。 I
couldn¨t believe she wasquizzing me I¨d never read an issue
ofRunway in my life!she wasn¨t allowed to ask me aboutthat one。 No
one cared aboutRunway 。 It was afashion magazine察for chrissake察one
I wasn¨t even sure contained any writing察just lots of
hungry´looking models and glossy ads。 I stammered for a moment or
two察while the different names of editors I¨d just before forced my
brain to remember all swirled inside my head察dancing together in
mismatched pairs。 Somewhere in the deep recesses of my mind察I was
sure I knew her name!after all察who didn¨t拭But it wouldn¨t gel in
my addled brain。
^Uh察well察it seems I can¨t recall her name right now。 But I know I
know it察of course I know it。 Everyone knows who she is I just察
well察don¨t察uh察seem to know it right now。 ̄
She peered at me for a moment察her large brown eyes finally fixated
on my now perspiring face。 ^Miranda Priestly察院she near´whispered察
with a mixture of reverence and fear。 ^Her name is Miranda
Priestly。 ̄
Silence ensued。 For what felt like a full minute察neither of us said
a word察but then Sharon must have made the decision to overlook my
crucial misstep。 I didn¨t know then that she was desperate to hire
another assistant for Miranda察couldn¨t know that she was desperate
to stop this woman from calling her day and night察grilling her
about potential candidates。 Desperate to find someone察anyone察whom
Miranda wouldn¨t reject。 And if I might!however unlikely!stand even
the smallest chance of getting hired and thereby relieve her察well察
then attention must be paid。
Sharon smiled tersely and told me I was going to meet with Miranda¨s
two assistants。Two assistants
^Why yes察院she confirmed with an exasperated look。 ^Of course
Miranda needs two assistants。 Her current senior assistant察Allison察
has been promoted to beRunway ¨s beauty editor察and Emily察the
junior assistant察will be taking Allison¨s place。 That leaves the
junior position open for someone
^Andrea察I know you¨ve just graduated from college and probably
aren¨t entirely familiar with the inner workings of the magazine
world 。 。 。 ̄ She paused dramatically察searching for the right words。
^But I feel it¨s my duty察myobligation察to tell you what a truly
incredible opportunity this is。 Miranda Priestly 。 。 。 ̄ She paused
again just as dramatically察as though she were mentally bowing。
^Miranda Priestly is the single most influential woman in the
fashion industry察and clearly one of the most prominent magazine
editors in the world。 The world The chance to work for her察to
watch her edit and meet with famous writers and models察to help her
achieve all she doeseach and every day察well察I shouldn¨t need to
tell you that it¨s a job a million girls would die for。 ̄
^Um察yeah察I mean yes察that does sound wonderful察院I said察briefly
wondering why Sharon was trying to talk me into something that a
million other people would die for。 But there wasn¨t time to think
about it。 She picked up the phone and sang a few words察and within
minutes she¨d escorted me to the elevators to begin my interviews
with Miranda¨s two assistants。
I thought Sharon was starting to sound a bit like a robot察but then
came my meeting with Emily。 I found my way down to the seventeenth
floor and waited inRunway ¨s unnervingly white reception area。 It
took just over a half hour before a tall察thin girl emerged from
behind the glass doors。 A calf´length leather skirt hung from her
hips察and her unruly red hair was piled in one of those messy but
still glamorous buns on top of her head。 Her skin was flawless and
pale察not so much as a single freckle or blemish察and it stretched
perfectly over the highest cheekbones I¨d ever seen。 She didn¨t
smile。 She sat next to me and looked me over察earnestly but with
little apparent interest。 Perfunctory。 And then察unprompted and
still having not introduced herself察the girl I presumed to be Emily
launched into a description of the job。 The monotone of her
statements told me more than all of her words此she¨d obviously gone
through this dozens of times already察had little faith that I was
any different from the rest察and as a result wouldn¨t be wasting
much time with me。
^It¨s hard察no doubt about it。 There will be fourteen´hour days察you
know!not often察but often enough察院she rattled on察still not looking
at me。 ^And it¨s important to understand that there will be no
editorial work。 As Miranda¨s junior assistant察you¨d be solely
responsible for anticipating her needs and acmodating them。 Now察
that could be anything from ordering her favorite stationery to
acpanying her on a shopping trip。 Either way察it¨s always fun。 I
mean察you get to spend day after day察week after week察with this
absolutely amazing woman。 And amazing she is察院she breathed察looking
slightly animated for the first time since we started speaking。
^Sounds great察院I said and meant it。 My friends who¨d begun working
immediately after graduation had already clocked in six full months
in their entry´level jobs察and they all sounded wretched。 Banks察
advertising firms察book publishing houses!it didn¨t matter!they were
all utterly miserable。 They whined about the long days察the
coworkers察and the office politics察but more than anything else察
they plained bitterly about the boredom。
